X-rays are electromagnetic waves that are generated for medical purposes using an X-ray tube. They are named after Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who discovered them in Würzburg in 1895. In the X-ray machine, the X-rays generated are sent through the area of the body to be examined, and the photons that pass through to form the image are then directed to a digital detector system. Modern image post-processing systems allow for the best possible image quality with a very low radiation dose.
